Canadian researcher and CTO chair named 2014 CIHR Health Researcher of the Year

Congratulations to Dr. Arthur Slutsky, Vice-President of Research at St. Michael’s Hospital, on winning the 2014 CIHR Health Researcher of the Year award in honour of his outstanding work in critical care medicine.

The prestigious award is granted by the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) to honour researchers who have demonstrated excellence in their field. It recognizes innovation, creativity, leadership and dedication to health research.

“I’m humbled to receive this award; Canada is a powerhouse in health research, with many deserving candidates in different fields,” Dr. Slutsky said in accepting the award.

A leading authority on critical care and pulmonary medicine, Dr. Slutsky’s major research interests relate to the lung injury caused by mechanical ventilation.

“Dr. Slutsky’s work in engineering and medicine has resulted in improved approaches to pulmonary care,” the CIHR said. “His findings have had a tremendous impact on clinical practice and have played a role in reducing patient mortality.”

From basic research to clinical trials, Dr. Slutsky has conducted a wide range of studies and published over 450 peer-reviewed papers, reviews and editorials.

Keenan Chair in Medicine at St. Michael’s Hospital and a University of Toronto professor, Dr. Slutsky also serves as Chair of the Board of Directors of Clinical Trials Ontario (CTO).

“We are thrilled to see Dr. Slutsky’s contributions to critical care medicine recognized with this top award,” said CTO President and CEO Susan Marlin. “He is an outstanding researcher and an example of the research excellence that exists in Ontario.”

Ms. Marlin said CTO is fortunate to have Dr. Slutsky’s help in achieving its vision of making Ontario a preferred location for global clinical trials, while maintaining the highest ethical standards.
